Best Black and White of the Day Part 3: Miranda Kerr

0
0
We all know and accept that Miranda Kerr has the best street style of any celebrity. All her best outfits are ones that she is papped in going about her day. And yesterday was no exception as she donned a black and white striped maxi dress, popping her favourite Levi's denim trucker jacket over it and then throwing on a brightly coloured scarf - which she must have known would make for better pictures.
With a studded sandal, a black tote and a classic pair of sunglasses, I am just realising that I have pretty much every item in my existing wardrobe to replicate a look like this for the summer. And I probably will too. Will you?

What Blake Lively Wears At Home

The rumour is that Martha Stewart magazine is doing a feature on the upstate New York home of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Fact is that Martha Stewart did their wedding a year ago and is an idol of Blake's, so it is probably true. That may be where these images leaked from as it shows Blake potting about her garden with a pup on a sunny summer afternoon in a pair of very ordinary casual cotton jeans and a short sleeve jumper. And some nice looking studded flats.
Her husband is doing manly things that require gloves on his hands, and his arm gun show. I am perfectly happy with this. I'm sure most of you are too. Comforting to know they are not completely perfect and coiffed at all times. Right?

2013 VMA Awards Red Carpet Best Dressed

Blimey. That was a dog show. The 2013 VMA Awards red carpet was an absolute travesty of tacky. What has happened that young women feel that in order to be acknowledged they have to show as much of their naked bodies as possible? Why are they all so incredibly desperate to get the biggest headlines that they have to be the most naked, the most shocking, the most weird, the most raunchy? They are all so busy trying to out-shock each other, that it has become wallpaper. I stop looking at them and seek out the ones that actually do impress me.
For example young Holland Roden from Teen Wolf is consistently getting onto my best dressed lists. I absolutely adore this Naeem Khan trouser and beaded top with over-skirt. I think she looks the perfect balance of elegant and edgy for the VMAs. Coco Rocha also impressed me by keeping things simple in black and then popping on an eye-wateringly amazing black leather jacket by Fausto Puglisi. And Allison Williams from Girls was a real treat in a delicate cream Valentino mini dress.
And whilst I didn't completely love Taylor Swift in Herve Leger or Selena Gomez in Atelier Versace, I definitely didn't hate them eitehr and I absolutely LOVE the choice of navy for the evening. These two besties obviously planned their looks together and I really do like that. Everyone else was just awful. Awful. Sies.

Dita von Teese in a Gucci Jumpsuit

I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I have seen Ms Dita von Teese dressed in trousers. And I know not of a single occasion in the past ten years when she has worn trousers for an evening function. So imagine my shock when I saw this amazing image of DvT in a Gucci jumpsuit. Doesn't she look just as incredible as ever? If there ever was a person who can make a jumpsuit look refined, elegant, ladylike, it is Dita. She carries this off in her signature style, and makes us all sit up and take notice. Sublime.

Alexa Chung in Kenzo in New York

Everything seems to be coming up roses for my mate Alexa Chung right now. Her profile has settled, her work is flowing, she is about to launch a beauty line and she seems to have found some degree of happiness in New York City. She looked especially pretty this weekend as she was out on the streets in a blooming frock from Kenzo.
Of course I have also noticed her red sandals, she being the second celeb in as many days to wear red sandals. When I saw them on Carey Mulligan on Friday I said I was getting some for this summer. Now I know I am. Boom.

Michelle Obama in Prabal Gurung for 2013 US Open

Kicking off the 2013 US Open Tennis Championships was the Arthur Ashe Kids Day, hosted by the FLOTUS Michelle Obama as it is part of her programme to get kids active. For the occasion Mrs O had a style triumph in this amazing yellow Prabal Gurung peplum top that she paired with white trousers and some comfy trainers.
I think that this is just about the most perfect outfit she could have worn. And I really wish I had it in my wardrobe. It is casual, but eye catching and elegant. It is age and event appropriate. And it is super fashionable. Winning all round. Well played, again, Mrs O.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney Host Tea in the Hamptons

I don't have many words for this. A tea party. In the Hamptons. Hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney. Wearing Stella McCartney obviously. I weep with longing. Wish I was there.

Candice Swanepoel in Pretty Good Black and White of the Day

I know that this isn't the most revolutionary outfit you ever did see, but it is black and white, and it is on a South African supermodel, ninth top earner of the year in the world. Candice Swanepoel stepped out in New York yesterday dressed in a pair of skin-tight white cropped jeans, Converse sneakers and a crop swing vest.
I get the feeling we are going to see many, many a teenage girl in this kind of outfit this summer. Considering that they are not generally blessed with Candice's freakishly good physiology, I would hope that they will rethink it. Just a suggestion.

Candice Swanepoel Covers Vogue Mexico Three Ways

The main shelf copy cover of onseCandice Swanepoel on Vogue Mexico has been widely published on the blogs. It is this one with her dressed in a bright red, 70s-inspired Valentino jumpsuit. And of course she looks incredible.
However, I have laid my hand upon two alternative covers, this one being a stunning Dolce and Gabbana red lace dress with that heavy chain neckpiece that I rather like.
And then this one is a close up. I am pretty sure that this was shot while Candice had her hair dyed for the CFDA awards a couple of months ago. It was all done in New York, where she was at the time, and we know this because I also ferreted out this short behind the scenes video of the shoot. She really is a fantastic looking woman. Especially in red. Third Vogue cover for the year. This girl is on fire.

Miley Cyrus: A VMAs Discussion

0
0
So Miley Cyrus is the talk of the town right now. And by town I obviously mean THE WORLD. That may well have been her objective as she turned up to the VMAs on Sunday night looking ridiculous in this Dolce and Gabbana ensemble of leggings with giant beads and a crop top. And those devil-horn pigtails. Frankly, I think she is adorable in the main. But this is an ugly outfit, you have to admit.
Then she popped out on stage in a spangle-tastic cartoon leotard - body looking all kinds of awesome - and managed to capture the attention of pretty much everyone across the globe. Mostly because, as one, we wanted to scream at her to PUT THAT TONGUE AWAY. My goodness it is annoying. For SUCH a talented girl - and she really is, I will hear no different - that small matter of a tongue is enough to make us all feel queasy. Stop it lady friend. You are better than this.
It became clear at this point that Miley can act and sing pretty well - and I think she is really pretty and is making some cool style decisions - but she absolutely cannot dance. She really is just unnerving to watch. As she stripped down to her latex bikini, I really wasn't that bothered. I was more concerned by how awkward that whole sexy routine was. It was the opposite of sexy. It was anti-sexy. Which I am pretty sure wasn't her objective. We have become totally immune to the skimpy stage costume. I have discussed this at length before on this blog. I am really not shocked by the minimal amount of clothing on the girl. Nor the crotch fondling or bum shaking. What I am more concerned about it her artifice.
As a Miley fan - and I genuinely like so many of her style choices - I have to say that this performance left me cold. It was disingenuous. I have read a lot about people's disgust at her appropriating black culture and I totally agree. This is not who she is. She is a pretty white girl, rich, talented and smart. She is trying to be seen as a ratchet, ghetto, black girl. Which she is patently not. Maybe because she thinks that being poor is cool, to quote Pulp. Maybe because it is just another one of her 'cultural phases' - I mean she was a punk a few months ago, a culture I objected to her appropriating inaccurately. Maybe because she is trying to find herself. But bless her, she is not going to succeed at that twerking on a global stage, to be fair. I feel really bad for the chick. When she fails, she does so on a massive scale. She was just not very good in her performance at the VMAs because this is not who she is. She was better as a punk, if I am honest. Anyway. I like her. I think she needs to move onto the next thing. I think she needs to stop trying to dance/twerk. I think she really needs to put her tongue away. And I think she needs to stop wearing leggings as pants. Aside from that, I support her 100%. I like her. I want her to succeed and find herself and be amazing. Don't you?

Valentino Fall 2013 Campaign

It is a rare day that I let the pictures speak for me. After all, I do like to use my words. But this new campaign for the Valentino Fall 2014 collection shut me up. Mostly. Just look at it. It was shot by Inez and Vinoodh. And I can't get over how gorgeous it is. Enjoy.

This year marks the 15th year of Louis Vuitton's coveted City Guides - in my opinion, the most stylish way to travel. And in celebration of this anniversary, they have announced that their series has had a complete make-over in design, and that nothing has been spared to make this unique collection truly exceptional. Covering the world's 15 most exciting cities, each volume covers an individual city, across all the continents, focused on fashion, design, contemporary art, food and culture.
And the best news of all is that one of the cities covered is Cape Town. My home town. In all its beautiful, quirky, complicated, hipster glory. Of course the Cape Town volume won't just be about us, it will also carry the LV philosophy of travel - as an art with multiple facets - packing tips, and features local guest contributor Beezy Bailey. You can buy the volumes individually (new BEST gift ever) or you can get your hands on the limited edition lacquered wood case of all 15 volumes and cities.
The new series will be available from the 1st November and pricing will be about 30Euros.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, Goes Shopping

I will start by saying that I think Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, looks fantastic. Healthy, happy, active and WITH A PONYTAIL. You know how that makes me giddy with joy. Kate had to pop out yesterday to go a grocery shop, and for the jaunt she wore a Ralph Lauren Breton stripe top with her old faithful Paige Denim stretch skinny jeans. And while we have definitely seen the jeans before, we haven't seen the top. Lose and comfortable, it is perfect for five weeks after the birth of her first baby.
And with that classic pairing, she wore her Sebago Bala boat shoes that she has had for a couple of years. With the pony tail and the shopping trolly, she could be any of us. On one of our casual chic days. Not that I have that many of those... Well played, Kate. Great look.

Victoria Beckham Does School Girl Chic in Isabel Marant

My mate Victoria Beckham flew out of LA last night and headed back to London for some work. She wore the outfit I would have worn every single day of my twenties if I possibly could have. It's that Isabel Marant tartan mini skirt that I am particularly in love with. With its swingy pleated back.
Of course I also love that it is paired with a simple black sweatshirt. And the ankle boots which are Giuseppe Zanotti are cool, but I would have worn the outfit with my Dr Martens. Boots or shoes. The bag is Victoria Beckham of course. It is the Seven, I believe. LOVE THIS. Do you?

Cate Blanchett in Christopher Kane for Blue Jasmine Paris Premier

How I absolutely adore Cate Blanchett and her impeccable yet exciting style. Never one to play it safe, she takes fashion risks, tries new designers, comes up with unexpected silhouettes and then makes them all work with her inimitable personal elegance. And so it is with this Christopher Kane dress that she wore to the Paris premier of Blue Jasmine last night.
Sure the dress is all asymmetry and weird length. That's kind of the best bit about it. The delicate black crochet over the nude lining could be goth-tastic, but Cate brings a delicacy and femininity to it that possible no one else could. She makes the length work with her height and carriage. She looks exquisitely beautiful in it and I completely love it. Posting on Cate is a funny thing, I don't get many hits. She is probably the least popular celeb that I post on. And yet, I can't help it. I just think she is the business. LOVE HER. Think she is possibly morphing into a mini-Tilda. And THAT my friends is a jolly good thing.

Rihanna's Week In Style

It's not often that I compliment Rihanna on her style. But when I do, it is because it is VERY good. I am just not a huge fan of the urban street style she favours and I often think that a bit less flesh exposed would be more interesting. We have all seen her in oversized sports wear and it suits her well enough. I think she works a trackie pant and heels better than anyone actually. And I love it when she appropriates men's high fashion. But I am totally over seeing her in sheers and mesh and bikinis. YAWN. Enough already. And then yesterday she wore this. Cool. Urban. Interesting. The little vintage bag. The pairing of trainers and dress. I LOVE IT.
I also think she did something super cool at the VMAs. I couldn't say she was best dressed or anything. But she did look awesome in a vintage t-shirt, her own Rihanna for River Island jeans and Manolo Blahnik shoes. And diamonds of course. It may not have been conventionally appropriate for the awards show, but I think it was hands-down the hippest outfit. And it felt really authentic. Like this was really her own style. Not what some stylist had put her in. I want more of this please.
Which is not to say that I didn't think she looked awesome in that tiny black Balmain dress, heels and red lips she changed into afterwards. She looked amazing. But predictable. And interchangeable. I think Rihanna is at her style best when she is switching things up. Being surprising. Making us notice with a whisper. That's is what authentic style will do. That is what the top two outfits do. Brilliantly.

Jessica Biel In Sheer Madness

You all know pretty much how I feel about Jessica Biel. Pretty girl, GREAT husband, boring as watching paint dry. Just no personality. No humour. And that, my friends, can really negatively effect one's ability to look great in clothes. You need personality to fill a dress. Else it is just a dress. Imagine, if you will, this Dolce and Gabbana sheer black lace dress on Helen Mirren. A woman twice her age. Wouldn't it just be full of sex and jokes and fun? On Jessica it just looks awkward. Like Miley, trying to be someone she is not.
And it didn't stop there. Ol' Jess is all about the getting it out at the moment it appears. She wore another sheer look yesterday. It was a very cute black romper from T by Alexander Wang which would have looked all kinds of hip on Kate Bosworth and yet looked weird and a bit sloppy on Jessica. No. I think Jess looks good when she keeps things tidy. She is not sheer-girl. She is sporty girl. Stick with it. Let this continue to be a lesson to us all on wearing what suits us, not just what looks nice in the store or in the campaign images. Word.

2013 Venice Film Festival: Sandra Bullock Opens in Style

I am so incredibly happy that it is the 2013 Venice Film Festival, bringing fun and style back to red carpet dressing after those dreadful VMAs. And kicking off the first day with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney was just spoiling us.
Sandra looking incredible on the red carpet last night in a folded red gown from J.Mendel that was as striking as it was surprising from a woman given to black on a red carpet. I absolutely loved it.
Earlier in the day, for the press call, Sandy had dropped some hints that she was embracing a bit of colour for the occasion in this incredible Alex Perry colour block shift.
I really liked the pairing with those gold and natural leather shoes and the complete absence of superfluous accessorising. This is something that Sandy does habitually and I have to say that I have taken note and adopted that approach for myself. Once piece is all you need. This is red carpet style at its best. I am so happy!

Michelle Obama in Duro Olowu and Tracy Reese

It was a significant day in US history yesterday, the 50th anniversary of the Martin Luther King "I have a dream" speech. And for the occasion the FLOTUS Michelle Obama wore an incredible black with red rose print dress by Tracy Reece. She looked magnificent.
It was noted that Mrs O selected not just an American designer for the occasion, but an African American designer. I think that it was a beautiful dress and all the better for the considerations she made in selecting it. Very well played.
But as an actual African, it pleases me even more that Shelley O continued her love affair with African designer Duro Olowu. The day before, debuting her new Scandal-inspired highlights, she wore a dress from the latest collection and looked really cool and pretty. Also, a different style of shoe for this event was a nice surprise. Lovely. Keep the flag flying lady!

Lena Dunham Covers UK Marie Claire, October 2013

We give dear Lena Dunham so much grief about her style. We do it with full respect for her incredible and precocious talent when it comes to writing, acting, directing, producing the hit series Girls. I mean, she is just a shining light of her time. But without a clue when it comes to dressing herself.
But she looks sensational on the cover of the October 2013 issue of the UK version of Marie Claire magazine, as she tweeted about last night. She is wearing a custom Erdem dress on the cover, made to fit and suit her figure. Even Lena was amazed that someone got it right.
The smokey eye is gorgeous on Lena. As is the florals and fur. I really am going to go out on a limb and say this is the best she has ever looked. Don't you think?
