Lucy Liu Covers Emmy Magazine, Spring 2013

0

Have you been watching Lucy Liu on Elementary  I have. I completely enjoy the series and I was just thinking yesterday that I am going to miss it as it comes to and end. Well, for this season. I do believe there is at least another one thankfully.
But even that doesn't make me as happy as this cover and story for the Spring 13 issue of Emmy magazine. It's an American publication, but one that is clearly tapping into the brand new trend of letting the actor-models show some personality in the shoots.
There is simply nothing that I have ever shot - or will ever shoot - or see any of my friends and colleagues shoot that could possibly make my heart soar more than this shot of Lucy in Alexander McQueen action. How amazing?
That this exists at all makes me hope that the future of fashion is not all emaciated sour-faces lying prone on some pavement/rock. We have had quite enough of that. Awesome clothes need awesome - energetic - models to show them off best. Someone like this. I love it.

Kate Hudson and Alexa Chung Are All White

I think I lived in the UK for too many years of my life. The Sun newspaper has drummed pun-tastic headlines into me. And now I am doing posts just to use them. I saw these images of my mate Alexa Chung and the lovely rom-com lady Kate Hudson both wearing off-white and I just had to post it. It's not a trend, as such, it's just for fun. Mostly my fun.
Alexa is wearing a gorgeous beaded dress with flats (about as exact an outfit as I would wear - love this) and Kate is carrying off a tricky knitted polo neck dress by Jenny Packham with an astonishingly unexpected degree of success. Who knew? Tally ho! See you tomorrow.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, in Emilia Wickstead Maternity Dress

Now this is what I am talking about. Beautiful, simple, pretty, appropriate and perfectly suited to her growing belly - this shimmering silver-blue dress that Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, wore to the National Portrait Gallery last night is by an oft-worn designer, Emilia Wickstead.
And doesn't she look summery and lovely? The shoes are a beautiful dove grey suede heel - higher than expected - but very elegant. And her only accessories are rings and a pair of perfect pearl earrings. This is how a modern woman dresses.
This is K-Middy's third engagement of the week. This one is particularly special to her as it is the art-related one. Supporting her charity, The Art Room, which supports children in risk through channeling them into art projects. Apparently her speech at this one was more confident and free-flowing than usual. Good girl.
Of course the bouncing curls were back. Sigh. But at least her hair was taken off her face more generally, which is exactly how it should be when you have such a high neckline. Hopefully she is starting to learn this - how to work your hair according to your neckline. If not, I am happy to help...

Olivia Palermo in Louis Vuitton

The lovely Olivia Palermo attended a Louis Vuitton store opening earlier this week in this perfect little tunic. She looks utter perfection. This tunic was worn with a longer skirt underneath in the look book, but Olivia put her own spin on things, as she does. And I know so many of you really admire this about her, as do I.
I do however need to issue a warning with this post - ladies with anything over an A-cup need to step away and admire this from afar. Due to the bust frills, you simply cannot have noticeable boob action without looking like an overdressed pole dancer. So this is for the flat-chested only. And it is great.
Olivia wore the same shoes for a function the next night - in Madrid - where she threw together a white shorts suit which she styled with an amazing neck piece. Fabulous and inspirational.

2013 Time 100 Gala Red Carpet Best Dressed : You Decide

So for me there is no doubt that Olivia Munn, in yellow lace Michael Kors, was the best dressed lady on the red carpet of the Time 100 Gala held in Times Square on Tuesday night. But apparently I am not in the majority. Apparently other people think differently. So I thought I may line up all the potential players, and you can decide who wears it best for the event. Over to you:
Aside from Olivia, we have the incomparable Claire Danes in Lanvin (love), the mediocre Padma Lakshmi and the rather horrifying Lena Dunham in Saint Laurent gold mesh. (I know I handed it over to you, but why do so many think this is a GOOD IDEA?? The dress looks horrendous! Right?)
Then there is the snooze-fest that it Jessica Biel looking quite amazing actually in Tom Ford, the awesome funny woman Amy Phoeler in black lace Tadashi Shoji and Christina Aguilera looking relatively good in Victoria Beckham. See anyone can wear VB and look awesome. Right. Lay it on me. Who did it best in your opinion. It can only help me, so please let me know.

Carey Mulligan Celebrates Anniversary in Style

It was Carey Mulligan's first wedding anniversary this week. Last year this time she married Marcus Mumford, of Mumford & Sons of course. And she was looking fabulous out on the streets of New York this week, as she took some time to celebrate her anniversary with her husband and take some time before The Great Gatsby promo juggernaut begins. I mean how stunning are those Proenza Schouler shoes?
As the first anniversary is celebrated with paper, I am amused to see the couple hanging out clutching paper cups of coffee. I know these guys are low-key but that would be a rather muted party...
I am not sure who made that awesome brown and black biker jacket - I love it - but I do know that her sunglasses are by Karen Walker. And they are also awesome. Do you like Carey's street style? Does it work for you? Let me know...

SA Angel Behati Prinsloo's Street Style

It's always nice to check into what our local girls are getting up to in bright lights big city. Behati Prinsloo, an African Victoria Secret Angel, was out in a windy New York City the other day, all scruffy-cool in her jeans, cropped top and unlaced soft trainers.
And this is where are natural beauty really shines through. Her personal style statements like the rolled bandana in her hair, the battered leather jacket and the always awesome sunglasses really make her appearance unique. But you can't do anything to hide her prettiness. This is how you do it, gals.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Antonio Berardi - Without Her Knickers

Oh what a kerfuffle. How many headlines like this have I read in the past day? Too many, that's how many. But so much funzies. Because for all the mother grundies that are clutching their pearls and gasping about how Gwyneth Paltrow didn't wear any knickers, I have news for you... no one saw a damn thing. No flashing at all. And there may even be a pair of Spanx under there, you can't quite tell. Probably not though.
This kimono-sleeve gown by Antonio Berardi is, in my opinion, an absolute dazzler. I love the line on it. I love the contrasting fabrications. I love the illusion it creates. And frankly, Gwyn has the body and the poise to carry it off to perfection. This is one occasion that her smug WASPishness comes completely into its own.
As you know I can't stand her smugness. But as I said to someone yesterday about K-Middy, fashion is a great leveler. I doesn't matter who you are a fan of - when the dress is good, it is good. Props to GP.

Emily Blunt in Victoria Beckham

This is not the first time that the divine Emily Blunt (newest member of fashion book club) has borrowed a dress from our mate Victoria Beckham at the end of one of our evenings. And I don't even have any great pictures of her in the dress. But it just makes my heart sing when we all along so well like this and support each other.
Earlier this week, Emily appeared on Jay Leno's show to promote her new movie, Arthur Newman, and wore this dress from the AW13 collection. Love it. Don't you?
PS: Tom Cruise was also on the show and Emily deployed her wicked sense of humour - the entire reason we welcomed her to book club - to take the piss out of the wee fellow. Thankfully she did it with such grace that he had to laugh along with her. Good girl.

Young Hipsters and Fashionistas in Chanel - Who Wore it Best?

0
0
Chanel threw a party at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York this week, and all the cute, young, hip girls that Kaiser Karl has been courting for the brand turned up in their very cutest, young, hip-est interpretations of the collections. I have to say this works. It is a bold statement of youth power for a very old, very fusty, very traditional brand. And yet it has lost nothing in the translation. Amazing. Every time I feel Karl may have gone too far, he shows what a genius he actually is. Obviously my mate Alexa Chung looked adorable as ever in her dress. DJ Leigh Lezark also always carries off Chanel impeccably. And Joan Smalls uses her model legs for good in this precious romper. Can you believe it? A Chanel romper. Who would have thought?
But for me it was an actress and a fashion editor who did it best. Giovanna Battaglia looked sensational with her red lip and slicked back hair perfectly complementing the black and white dress. And Elvis' granddaughter and actress, Riley Keough looking extraordinary in her grey dress with fire-red hair. Blew me away.

Angel Candice Swanepoel's New Campaign for Victoria Secret - It's Different

We are all quite used to seeing South African Angel Candice Swanepoel in her underwear. In fact she has literally made her fortune from it. But her employers, Victoria Secret, have now taken it to the next level. And are currently shooting this campaign with Candice in New York. It's a shocker.
By which I mean, of course, that it is shocking that she is wearing clothes. VS clothes to be precise. This is the new apparel range by Victoria Secret. And it seems very nice.
I am not sure that we all want apparel from VS. We can get plenty of this kind of thing from Woolies to be fair. Or Topshop or Zara or Gap or Banana Republic now. Do we need classic city basics from a company specialising in sexy underwear and cozzies?
Of course our girl Candice makes all the garments look fabulous. We imagine - inaccurately - that we will all look just like this if we pop on this dress or pair of jeans. Which is funny, obviously, since Candice is blessed in the looks department so far above us ordinary folks.
But the pictures look like great fun, and we ALWAYS wish our girl all the best of luck in everything she does, so we hope this campaign is a massive success. Also for the new star of the shoot - her pup Milo - who was taken to work to be a part of things. Love Milo.

Ladies of Mad Men Promotes Season 6 in Style

The most successful of the three lady stars of the extensive Mad Men Season 6 promotional tour, for me, was newcomer Jessica Pare. She hit a home run on her first outing in the green sheath of glory from L'Wren Scott. I think that this dress is utterly sublime. She followed it up with an interesting Roksanda Ilincic shift dress of pastels, and finished up with a Fendi classic, adding more texture and interest with those contrast leather shoes. All three looks were successful and she looked good, nay sensational in the first one.
Christina Hendricks also had a home run in her three outings. That Altuzarra dress at the end, with white frill and side slit - especially paired with those gold glitter Stella McCartney pumps - was made my the gods for her body. She looks magnificent and I want to cry a little. The purple L'Wren Scott cardigan was also lovely although I felt the maxi was way too much. And the simple, perfectly fitted black dress that kicked things off was great. Nothing special, but perfect in its simplicity. So a good showing.
January Jones was far more prolific in her outings this week. And yet, jackets of deliciousness aside, has been a bit of a style disappointment. First up, let's just get the jacket thing out the way. Gimme. Both the Versace leather biker and the Elizabeth and James denim jacket. Just gimme. Now. Sadly, aside from that flippy Parker skirt she wore first up, I have nothing much else to say. Sure the Helmut Lang leather trousers are cool. But you can get leggings from Woolies that look like that. And the whole white dress situation is just a gigantic snooze-a-thon. No. Jackets aside, this is a fail. But what do you guys think? Which of the Mad Men ladies did it for you in style? Let me know.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, In Topshop for Harry Potter Tour

Lucky Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, and her husband and brother-in-law, got a tour of the Warner Studios in London on Friday. It includes a full showing of Hogwarts from the Harry Potter films. For the occasion, Kate chose to wear a black and white polka dot dress from Topshop, which she paired with an old favourite Ralph Lauren jacket.
Perfectly appropriate for the occasion, me thinks. And a great sassy little number with a nice short hem and a playful attitude. It suited the Harry Potter vibes perfectly.
And while this thirty eight pound dress was not designed as a maternity dress, it actually worked rather well for most of the time. Of course the dress sold out globally within an hour of the pictures hitting the internet. Which is pretty good going.
As usual I would have preferred a ponytail for the style really to work properly. I mean, if you are going to wear a polka dot mini dress, you surely don't mean to draw the line at a cute messy pony tail? Sigh. I just don't understand what she has against tying her blasted hair up!
The next morning, like many of us, Kate met up with her mum for a spot of shopping. And look! A pony!! Imagine my delight and surprise. And just look how WELLLLLL it works with the collar and the bump and how much more modern and cool she looks. Seriously. I know what I am talking about here. She should listen. Great maternity top here, by the way. Awesome.

White House Correspondent's Dinner 2013 Red Carpet Best Dressed

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the best dressed lady at the 2013 White House Correspondents Dinner was Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery. She simply looked sensational.
She was wearing a rare un-beaded Elie Saab gown in purple with an exposed zip and beautiful silk chiffon kick pleats in the skirt. This is a perfect fit. Regal and elegant and beautiful and fashion.
Also looking good was Jessica Pare in Antonio Berardi, Nicole Kidman in the softest 20s-style Emilio Pucci and Katy Perry in Giambattista Valli. Somewhat restrained but definitely beautiful.
Then there was First Lady Michelle Obama who I think looked amazing in Monique Lhullier, but we have yet to see an image of the gown in all its glory. But from the top half it is brilliant.
And the gals in black and white were also worth commenting on. Kerry Washington in Wes Gordon did something cool and interesting. Kate Walsh was in Carolina Herrera and Amy Poehler boxed above her style-weight in beaded Basler and looked very, very good.
Who was your style favourite? Let me know.

2013 White House Correspondent's Dinner Red Carpet: The Bad and Ugly

Oh dear. Here are some dresses on AWESOME lady people which could have been great but just weren't. Olivia Munn wore sleek black Marchesa with a silver bib. Huh? You are better than this. dear. And the BRILLIANT Elizabeth Banks wore a rather cool Roland Mouret gown - cool in construction not in colour. It landed up looking a bit like a napkin. Claire Danes - why can't all actresses be more like her - wore baby blue Prada. Um. No. The colour is bad and the Farrah Fawcett hair is a disaster. And Emily Mortimer was beautiful in red Oscar de la Renta. But so much of the red. Too much for a wee girl.
And then there were the utter disasters. Patricia Arquette spilling out of that feathered disaster. Morena Baccarin in side-exposed J.Mendel that just didn't work with that giant 80s hair. Sophia Bush - who used to be a style fave - looking altogether too princess-adjacent in Lela Rose. And Julie Bowen in scaled Monique Lhullier with those pigeon toes. Why couldn't she just look to Dame Helen for lessons in poise?

Dame Helen Mirren is Best Actress at 2013 Olivier Awards

Oh how I love you, Dame Helen Mirren. 67 years old and still looking like a hot, relevant, sexy woman. Last night in London Dame Helen won her first Olivier Award (UK theatre awards) for her portrayal of HRH The Queen in The Audience. She quipped, "the Queen won a BAFTA, now she has got an Olivier, I think she is going to be thrilled."
This classy broad wore a deep scooped neck midnight blue lace gown and had her hair swept up in an elegant style. It took nothing away from her twinkle in her eye and her fab figure. But most of all I noticed her poise. Her incredibly elegant posture and the way in which she carries herself. You can be as  ribald as you like, but do it with great posture and you will always look incredible. Love her.

Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham for Vogue Festival, London

My mate Victoria Beckham spoke yesterday at the Vogue Festival in London. For the occasion she wore that great split skirt from her AW13 collection in grey, and paired it with her Victoria Beckham blouse, also in silver grey. I think she looked beyond chic. She looks chic in a way that actually Victoria Beckham (the line) has made chic. I love it.
And while I don't like to harp on about how right I am - please note that my mate VB is wearing her long brown hair in a pony tail. Yes, just about the most stylish woman on the planet is wearing a pony - SO WHY CAN'T KATE? Ahem. Yes. So there you go. Life by the VB rules for the win...

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, is Peachy Keen at Hospice Engagement

In the UK right now it is Children's Hospice Week, and it has Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge's  full support. She put out her first video in support of it, and she popped into Naomi House yesterday to visit and see the work they do with children and families with life-threatening illnesses. And this is really where her magic lies. Being able to, apparently unconditionally, throw her power behind such a worthy cause. That's why we care about her.
So it shouldn't matter that her outfit was a monstrosity, right? The shades-of-peach collection of maternity dress and coat is right out of the eighties mum-to-be playbook that Kate has thus far successfully avoided. What on earth made her stumble and fall?
The peach coat is by Tara Jarmon and then K-Middy had the dress made to match by a private dressmaker for some unfathomable reason. To match? Seriously? Why? She is a modern girl with pretty good taste - I mean she chose to wear McQueen for her wedding for goodness sake. What on earth possessed her to wear a matching peach dress and coat? I am totally perplexed.
I will overlook, of course, due to the good cause and how well she has been doing of late. But I will not forget. Anymore peach ensembles and we are going to have to have WORDS, my friend Kate.
PS: I like the wavy curls in this new hairstyle a lot more than the curls at the tips as is her usual style. I think it is more casual and modern. But she still needs to mix things up a bit on the hair front. Yes?

Julianne Moore is Regal in Alexander McQueen

This woman can seemingly do no wrong. Take the fact that she is a ginger. And in her fifties. And then try and put that together with the fact that Julianne Moore is one of the undeniable international style icons of our generation. She is still setting the pace - often in edgy Tom Ford or Lanvin. Here in Alexander McQueen. She doesn't over acccessorise. She doesn't miss a step. She is 100% current.
Seriously fabulous. With Narciso Rodriguez shoes and a McQueen clutch, Jules delivers fashion right here, right now. In your face fey blonde youths...

Carey Mulligan Covers UK Harpers Bazaar: The Prettiest Cover Ever?

Seriously, have you ever seen such a pretty cover of a fashion magazine, like, ever? This is the June issue of Harpers Bazaar, UK edition, and they have put their local girl of the moment, Carey Mulligan, on the cover for spring. And I don't think I have ever been more delighted.
On both the original and subscriber issues, Carey is wearing a pink Prada jacket. I actually may shed a tear or two for the pretty. It moves me like that. Don't you think? Wow.
